The Education Foundation of the Summit welcomes three new board members, enhancing the organization’s leadership with diverse expertise. Lonita Benson is the contracts manager at World Wide Technology, which specializes in AI, cybersecurity, and more. She earned a Master of Jurisprudence at Loyola University Chicago and Bachelor of Arts, International Studies at University of Missouri Columbia.

“I joined the EFS Board because I value its mission and strongly support the organization’s work and community impact. EFS’s mission bolsters our community by enabling and encouraging both students and teachers through increased access to enriching educational opportunities. I am elated and grateful to be part of such a wonderful organization!”

Michael Holcomb is the manager of People & Culture at The Pinnacle Companies, creating beautiful spaces that bring people together. He earned a Master’s in Secondary Education and Teaching from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

“With a professional background deeply rooted in human resources and as a former high school educator, I have always believed in the transformative power of education and community. Joining the board of directors at EFS is a decision driven by my recognition of the foundation’s essential role in creating enhanced and equitable educational opportunities for students in Summit County. The organization’s dedication to providing every child with the tools they need to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally aligns with my core beliefs. Education, to me, is the cornerstone of empowering individuals and strengthening communities, and EFS’s commitment to this cause through its support for students, teachers, and schools is both admirable and urgent.

Drawing on my experience, I understand the critical importance of tailored support in unlocking an individual’s potential. I am eager to bring this insight to my role with EFS, contributing to an environment that nurtures the diverse talents and ambitions of our youth. Preparing them for a successful future means ensuring they have access to the right resources and opportunities to learn, grow, and eventually, contribute to their communities.

As I step into my role with the Education Foundation of the Summit, I am motivated by the opportunity to use my skills and passions to help shape a brighter future for our students. Working together, I believe we can make a significant impact, creating a world where every child is prepared to chase their dreams and achieve their full potential, regardless of their starting point. It is an honor to serve an organization that aligns so closely with my personal and professional values.”

Jorge Vasquez is the director of housekeeping at Summit County Mountain Retreats, which has provided Keystone lodging since 2008. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and Management.

“From the vibrant country of Peru, to the majestic landscapes of Colorado, my journey has been as much about finding home as it is about discovering the power of education in bridging worlds. As a local professional, I’ve come to appreciate the intricacies of our community and the universal language of service and care.

Being bilingual has opened countless doors for me and deepened my understanding of the diverse tapestry that makes up our community. It’s taught me the importance of communication, connection, and the rich perspectives that come from being able to navigate more than one culture. This personal insight drives my passion for ensuring that education in Summit County is accessible and equitable for all students, regardless of their linguistic or cultural background.

Joining the board of directors for the Education Foundation of the Summit felt like a natural extension of my life’s journey. I believe wholeheartedly in the Foundation’s mission to not only enhance educational experiences but also to champion the cause of equity in education. Every child deserves access to quality education that respects and nurtures their individuality while preparing them for a global community.

My experience has shown me that education can be the great equalizer, but only if we commit to making it inclusive and accessible to everyone. Through my work with the Foundation, I aim to ensure that language and culture serve as bridges, not barriers, to learning. I’m dedicated to fostering programs that support bilingual education and cultural competence among students and educators alike.

I joined the board because I want to be part of a future where every child, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to thrive and succeed. Together, we can build a community where education opens doors to understanding, respect, and opportunity for all.”
