Recently Summit middle schoolers had a fun experience that they won’t forget—they met a famous author.

Author Gordon Korman with students

Gordon Korman, renowned author, visited Summit Middle School and told the students: I came here because I wanted to talk to you. I really appreciate the opportunity to inspire you as a reader and a writer because your whole life you will be reading and writing. He told them: when I was your age, I certainly didn’t believe my career would be writing and yet, this summer my 100th book will be published.

The kids listened intently and asked questions like “what do you do when you get writer’s block?” Gordon signed books and ate lunch with six students from each grade who were chosen by their teachers to sit with the author.

Debra Mitchell, EFS board member, said, “So much of what we need in the world, particularly today, is on an emotional level and it is truly a magical experience for kids to interact with a published author.”

The connection the author made with the students is a turning point for many. It helps students get more engaged in their reading, which encourages them to become lifelong readers and writers.

We followed up the next day with Rebecca Kaplan, SMS Library Information Specialist, who said “Students are feeling inspired to read, write, and make bold moves (like sending their manuscripts to Scholastic)!”
