Education Foundation of the Summit (EFS) is honored to welcome Flor Cruz to the board of directors. Flor’s background and dedication to education are big assets that bring a unique perspective to the foundation.

Flor Cruz

Flor will be our first director to have attended schools in Summit School District since she was seven-years-old. At that time, her family immigrated from Mexico City. Her aunt decided Summit County was where they should live, because of its natural beauty and because it was a resort community with many job opportunities. Flor started at Frisco Elementary, went through both Summit Middle and Summit High, then on to Colorado Mountain College where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Business. Flor plans to earn a master’s in business administration through Regis or CSU.

While earning her bachelor’s, Flor was employed at First Bank. You may remember seeing Flor and her husband selling tickets at Trivia Night in past years.

After staying at First Bank for four-and-a-half years, she had an opportunity to work at CMC starting Jan 2018. Flor said, “First Bank gives so much back to the community, and that inspired me do even more. At CMC, I help people enroll and provide academic advising.”

While in school, Flor enjoyed how Summit School District incorporated the outdoors into learning that involved all students. “When I was in school, it was hard for my family to afford those activities, but I really enjoyed how the community was able to support students like me who didn’t have that financial ability. Through donations and grants, students went ice skating, snowboarding, and participated in other activities which helped us learn more about where we live. I remember going to Keystone Science School and that was a really neat experience.”

That love for the outdoors is still a big part of Flor’s life. “I love hiking, listening to all the natural noises like the wind, river, and leaves blowing. I like just being outside, even if it’s eating or reading. I enjoy that. It’s so beautiful here.”

Flor joined the Education Foundation “to give back to the community that’s helped me throughout so many years.” Flor already knew two EFS board members well during her CMC studies and experiences, Bonnie Ward and Sharon Koblinsky. Sharon was her mentor at CMC. Flor enjoys the foundation’s perspective on helping students accomplish their education goals. “So much of what I learned in school was to ask, how can I make the world a better place? Education is so important. I love to learn and be challenged. It’s the perfect place and the perfect timing for me to be in education right now.”
